Steve Mensingers' tie to the development industry is a long standing one.
Mensinger began his career with real estate developer, republican billionaire George Argyros as a driver. He then moved up in rank to became president of the apartment division at George Argyros' company-Arnel Management Co. and later SunCal, another of Argyros' many companies.
All campaign contributions and expenditures are filed with the Secretary of State. These forms are titled: CA form 460 Schedule A Monetary Contributions Received and can be viewed directly on the City of Costa Mesa website.
You will find that the information provided on the Secretary of State website does not match the actual expenditures on the forms provided above. The reason for this is that ONLY electronic submissions are provided on the Secretary of State website. The total for the year 2012 shows $25,047.00 on the Scertary of State site. But, in actuality the total campaign contributions received for 2012 exceeded $100,000.00!!!

When Mensinger is not being paid $15-a-day to fulfill his civic duty, he earns bukoo bucks to preside over Irvine-based developer SunCal's multifamily division. In essence, he's in charge of the apartments, townhomes and condos that are included in SunCal projects.
Another fun Mensinger fact: before joining SunCal in December 2007, he was president of Arnel Management Co., the apartment division of billionaire former U.S. Ambassador to Spain George Argyros' Costa Mesa-based Arnel & Affiliates real estate company. Longtime readers know the Weekly has pounded on Argyros, Arnel and particularly the apartment division over the years (far too many citations to link to).
Another fun Mensinger fact: when he was announced as SunCal's new multifamily division president, another Weekly nemisis was unveiled as the developer's commercial division president: Jim Righeimer.
Like Argyros President, Like Argyros Son

In September, Stephen Mensinger, the president and chief operations officer for billionaire developer/GOP Sugar Daddy/ex-Ambassador to Spain George Argyros' Arnel Management Co. apartment slumlord division, walked into an Alaska Airlines office next to John Wayne Airport's baggage carousel to find out what happened to his bags containing guns and game meat he'd just brought back from a hunting trip. The attendant Mensinger approached was in the middle of helping another customer, so she suggested he double check the carousel and fill out a claim form. The Arnel executive apparently exploded, calling the attendant a "dumb blonde." When the attendant made a disparaging remark about hunters into her phone -- a shocked supervisor on the other end of line wondered who the asshole was -- Mensinger then yelled, "I'm a sheriff!" He snapped pictures of the woman with his cell phone and said he could get her fired. The attendant was so frightened she wanted to call in security, but the same department Mensinger (pick one) ...
1) mistakenly;
2) illegally
... claimed to be employed by--the Orange County Sheriff's Department--patrols the airport.
Well, wouldn't you know it, after Mensinger made his scene and left, the airlines called the sheriff's office and discovered the slumlord was not a "sherff," hell, he wasn't even a deputy or a reserve. He's an "honorary reserve," which means he has no police powers because he has no police training. What he has -- thanks to the thousands of dollars he, his boss Argyros and Arnel have showered on Carona, Carona's buddies and GOP candidates nationwide, is an honorary badge, department identification, a permit to carry a concealed weapon and a nifty decoder ring.
